Wilmington Police announce passing of K9 EXO:
It is with great sadness that the Wilmington Police Department announces the passing of K9 EXO.
EXO was an 11-year-old male German Shepherd who served the Wilmington Police Department and the City of Wilmington for more than 9 years.
EXO was born in the Czech Republic and was trained to detect narcotics. Throughout his career, he was responsible for the recovery of significant quantities of illegal drugs.
While EXO ended his active service on patrol in 2019 when his handler – Master Sergeant Andrew Conine – was promoted to sergeant, he continued to serve the agency and community as an ambassador for the department, attending more than 1,000 community events and demonstrations at schools and community centers throughout the area. In this role, EXO helped to teach children and residents about the role of police canines, and about their service to the public. EXO also continued to maintain his certification to detect narcotics, and continued to actively assist with drug investigations.
“We appreciate EXO’s dedicated service to our community and department, and our thoughts are with Sergeant Conine and his family, as well as his colleagues in the Canine Unit,” said Chief Wilfredo Campos. “We appreciate the dedication of all of the K9 partners who serve our city alongside our police officers.”
