Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared March 16-22 as Michigan's Severe Weather Awareness Week. As part of this, a voluntary statewide tornado drill will be held on Wednesday, March 19th at 1:00 PM.

This drill provides an opportunity to practice your severe weather safety plan. While participation is voluntary, it is highly encouraged to ensure your preparedness in the event of a real tornado.

To be ready for a tornado:

• Know the difference between a tornado WATCH and a tornado WARNING.
• Recognize the signs of an approaching tornado.
• Stay tuned to local news broadcasts for weather updates.
• Develop an emergency preparedness kit.
• Identify a safe place in your home.
• Understand your local tornado warning system.
• Contact your local emergency manager to learn about local alerts and participation.

The National Weather Service reports that Michigan averages 15 tornadoes each year, and the average lead time for tornado development is only 10-15 minutes. Being prepared can save lives.
