DATE: March 17, 2025
TIME: 5:15PM
CASE NUMBER: 25-503730
INCIDENT TYPE: Violation of Bond/Protective Order
OFFICER SUBMITTING RELEASE: Lt. James Clements-Homicide Commander/Cpl. Carmela Ogden-PIO
DETAILS: On March 17, 2025, at approximately 5:15 PM, officers from the Amarillo Police Department were dispatched to the 4900 block of Southwest 16th in response to a report of a male in possible mental distress. Upon arrival, officers located the individual, identified as 33-year-old Zane Calum Prescott, inside his vehicle and armed with a firearm.
Officers strategically backed away and requested assistance. The APD SWAT team and APD negotiators responded. Negotiators established communication with Prescott and engaged with him for several hours in an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully.
During the investigation, it was discovered that Prescott was in violation of a protective order that prohibited him from possessing a firearm. Consequently, an arrest warrant was issued for his arrest.
As officers attempted to take Prescott into custody, he rammed his vehicle through a fence on the south end of his residence and fled the scene. A pursuit ensued, leading officers outside the city limits to Bushland, Texas. Prescott’s vehicle eventually became inoperable and stalled at Bushland Road and Wind River Dr.
Despite ongoing efforts to make contact with Prescott, he was ultimately found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his vehicle.
Justice of the Peace Taylor was notified, and an autopsy has been ordered.
Next of kin have been notified, and the Amarillo Police Department’s homicide unit has been called in to assist with the ongoing investigation.
The Amarillo Police Department is committed to maintaining public safety and will provide updates as more information becomes available
