Two Suspects Arrested in Connection to Grand Theft from Local Retail Store; a Third Suspect Booked on Firearm Charge

SUMMARY: On Tuesday, November 5, 2024, California voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 36, known as “The Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act.” Proposition 36 took effect on Wednesday, December 18, 2024. Proposition 36 modifies existing laws and adds substantive charges and enhancements to areas of the California Penal Code and Health and Safety Code regarding theft, property damage, and drug-related crimes.
Between February 13, 2025, and March 12, 2025, deputies and detectives assigned to the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Station, worked with Yucca Valley Walmart’s Asset Protection Officer regarding two suspects who were identified after committing multiple thefts from the store, totaling over $3,000. The Asset Protection Officer contacted law enforcement on several occasions, after the suspects walked out with carts full of merchandise and did not cooperate with the Asset Protection Officer.
During the investigation, the suspects were identified as Nashyrah Dunn and Amber Dunn, both residents of Yucca Valley. Arrest warrants were issued for both for conspiracy to commit grand theft and commit theft with two prior convictions, with a bail amount set at $50,000.00. On March 13, 2025, both Amber and Nashyrah were contacted and arrested on their active warrants and booked into the Morongo Basin jail.
On Tuesday, March 18, 2025, deputies and detectives authored two search warrants for two residences in the 6300 block of Richard Avenue, in connection with thefts from Walmart. During the service of the search warrants, investigators located and recovered approximately $1400. worth of reported stolen property, belonging to Walmart. Investigators also located two firearms and contacted an occupant of the residence, Karmella Gratt. Gratt is a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing firearms. Gratt was arrested and booked into the Morongo Basin jail for felon in possession of a firearm, with a bail amount set at $30,000.
