INCIDENT TYPE: Fatal Crash 3700 W I-40
OFFICER SUBMITTING RELEASE: Lt Gross-Traffic Investigation Unit; Sgt. Burr-PIO
DETAILS: On March 19, 2025, at approximately 3:36 pm, Officers were dispatched to a major traffic collision in the 3700 block Of W I-40. Upon arrival, they discovered a wreck that involved 2 vehicles, a trailer, and a fixed object. An Older Toyota Tundra pulling a 12' U-Haul trailer driven by a male age 50 of Fountain Hills, AZ was eastbound on I-40 going over the Western St Overpass. The drive of the Toyota lost control of his vehicle and rear ended a 2017 BMW X3 driven by a female age 28 of Amarillo. This caused the BMW to careen into the center cement divider for I-40. The BMW eventually came to stop in the grassy median separating I-40 proper from the south frontage road. After the Tundra struck the BMW it crossed I-40, the grassy median, the south frontage road, and then slammed head on into the Rudy's BBQ Sign. The driver was taken to a local area hospital with life threatening injuries. The passenger in the Tundra, Julia Grubb, female, age 58 also from Fountain Hills, AZ died as a result of injuries received in the collision. The driver of the BMW was uninjured. The collision disrupted traffic in the area for quite some time. Justice of the Peace Robert Taylor has ordered an autopsy on Ms. Grubb. Speed is a primary factor in this crash. The incident is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department.
