Man Arrested for Fraud Scams on Elderly

On March 21, 2025, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department responded to a call from Wells Fargo in the City of Oakdale regarding a potential scam involving an elderly male customer. A concerned bank teller reported that the individual had been instructed by someone over the phone to withdraw $50,000, an amount the customer had already withdrawn the previous day. Suspecting that the elderly customer was the victim of a scam, the teller promptly alerted the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's General Crime Unit (GCU) detectives quickly took action, collaborating with the Sheriff's Community Resource Unit, patrol deputies, and Air Support Unit. Together, they coordinated an undercover operation with the full cooperation of the victim and Wells Fargo Bank. The detectives led the scammers to believe they would be receiving another $50,000 from the victim at a pre-arranged location.

When the suspects arrived to collect the funds, they were arrested and taken into custody, with a bail enhancement imposed to prevent them from using the stolen money for their release.

We urge all residents to be cautious of scams that come in many forms, especially those involving requests to withdraw large sums of money or provide personal identifying information to unfamiliar individuals. Take time to share this important information with elderly parents or family members, as they are often targeted by phone scammers. If you suspect you are a victim of a scam, please contact law enforcement immediately.
