As of 7:30 p.m. on 3/27/25 there are no active fires in McDowell. Smoke is coming from wildfires in other WNC counties.

SMOKE UPDATE:
The McDowell County 911 Center is receiving multiple calls from concerned citizens reporting smoke across McDowell County. As of 7:30 p.m. on 3/27/25 there are no active fires in McDowell. Smoke is drifting from wildfires in other WNC counties. Smoke will continue to affect the area through Friday. Report all active fires to 911.

RED FLAG WARNING ISSUED FOR FRIDAY:
The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a Red Flag Warning for wind and low relative humidity, which is in effect from noon to 8 PM EDT Friday.

* TIMING...From noon to 8 PM EDT Friday.

* WINDS...Southwest 5 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 to 30 mph.

* HUMIDITY...As low as 20%.

* FUEL MOISTURE...10-hour fuel moisture expected to fall below 10%
Friday afternoon.

* IMPACTS...Any fire that develops will catch and spread
quickly. Outdoor burning is not permitted.  A statewide burn ban is in effect.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can
contribute to extreme fire behavior.
