Advisory

Jersey Avenue closure postponed to on or about April 7th

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has informed the City of Hoboken that the anticipated closure of Jersey Avenue for construction of the Rebuild by Design – Hudson River (RBDH) project’s Resist structure’s floodgate has been postponed.

Originally scheduled to close in both directions between Harrison Street in Hoboken and 18th Street in Jersey City on March 31, for approximately one month, the NJDEP now anticipates the closure to take place on or about Monday, April 7. Mitigation strategies, including extra lanes on Grove and Newark Streets, will be implemented prior to the closure date.

For more information and details about the mitigation efforts go to: https://www.hobokennj.gov/news/city-of-hoboken-announces-traffic-mitigation-efforts-ahead-of-anticipated-njdep-rebuild-by-design-construction-in-southwest-hoboken

The Rebuild by Design project was initiated to protect Hoboken, and portions of Weehawken and Jersey City from storm surge flooding, following Hurricane Sandy which inundated Hoboken with over 500 million gallons of stormwater.

When complete, the comprehensive flood protection system will remove approximately 80 percent of the City from the FEMA-designated flood plain helping to significantly reduce flood insurance rates for residents.

The flood-resistant infrastructure will be integrated into the urban landscape with new community amenities.

At Harborside Park, for example, residents will enjoy public open space that includes a playground, amphitheater, gardens, plaza, and green spaces. Hidden within the park’s design is a sliding floodgate that will remain unseen on sunny days but can be deployed when needed to connect with the Resist structure across 15th Street, keeping the Hudson River at bay during major storm events.

In southern Hoboken, the Resist structure will take the form of wayfinding signage, planters, seating, public art, and more. For more information on the Jersey Avenue closure, go to https://local.nixle.com/alert/11453175/.
