Here is the latest Take Five briefing from the April 1, 2025 meeting of the Mayor and Borough Council.

1) Coffee & Conversation with the Mayor and Council Members: In honor of the New Jersey League of Municipalities’ Local Government Week, the Mayor and Council Members have scheduled “office hours” at various local eateries downtown on April 7, 8, and 9. Click here for the full schedule. They look forward to listening to your ideas and concerns and answering any questions you may have – no appointment required!

2) Lease Renewals: The Borough Council introduced ordinances to renew leases for five Borough-owned properties, including 20 River Road (Environmental Education Center - Raices Cultural Center), 101 Raritan Avenue (Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership), 212 Raritan Avenue, 1st Floor (Main Street Highland Park), 212 Raritan Avenue, 2nd Floor (Reformed Church of Highland Park-Affordable Housing Corporation), and 127-133 Raritan Avenue (Reformed Church of Highland Park-Affordable Housing Corporation). These lease renewals reflect the Borough Council’s commitment to working with local partners to meet the environmental, educational, and housing needs of the community. The public hearings on these ordinances are scheduled for the Council Meeting on Tuesday, April 15, 2025 at 7 PM.

3) Capital and Salary Ordinances: The Borough Council introduced an ordinance to approve $413,935 for roadway improvements for North 10th Avenue and Volkert Street. This project is funded by the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s Municipal Aid Program. The Borough Council also introduced an ordinance that updated the salary ranges for all non-union positions within the Borough. A public hearing on both ordinances is scheduled for the Council Meeting on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at 7 PM.

4) Budget Introduction: The 2025 Municipal Budget was introduced and presented by Borough Administrator Teri Jover. Presentation slides can be viewed here . In addition to the Municipal Budget, the Borough Council introduced a resolution for Main Street Highland Park’s 2025 Budget . A public hearing and vote on both budget proposals are set for Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at 7 PM.

5) Funding Application for New EV Shuttle Bus: The Borough Council introduced a resolution authorizing an application to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Diesel Modernization Program. If awarded, the grant would help offset the cost of purchasing an electric community shuttle bus that will replace the Borough’s old one that is no longer in service.
