The Ojai Investigations Bureau would like to educate the community and remind them to be alert to ongoing financial scams that attempt to solicit funds from unsuspecting victims. Millions of elderly Americans are targeted by criminals each year with a variety of financial fraud. It is common for criminals to impersonate family members, government agencies, technical support professionals, banking institutions, and others to steal money and information. On 03/28/2025, an Ojai resident reported being the victim of a scam. The victim spoke to a caller who identified themselves as a United States Marshals agent. The caller told the victim he needed to withdraw all the money from his bank account and send it in the mail to an out-of-state location. After the victim sent a large amount of cash, the victim was instructed to meet with the Ojai Police Chief at the police station. After arriving at the police station, the victim realized the incident was a phone scam. Tips to Protect Yourself Against Scams
If you receive a suspected scam call, text or email, we recommend citizens hang up, block the number (if possible), and do not send the scammers any money. If you are unsure or confused about the call because the caller sounds legitimate, the Ojai Police Department is asking Ojai residents to get a second opinion from a relative, friend, neighbor, or the police department when they receive a call asking for them to send any form of money in the mail, over wires, over text, or emails. You can contact the Ojai Police Station at 805-646-1414 and not the number provided by the suspected scammer. If you are a victim of a scam, please contact the Sheriff’s Dispatch non-emergency number at 805-654-9511 to make a report. You can also file a complaint online with the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov or the Federal Bureau of Investigation at www.ic3.gov. |
