Twelve Arrested, Cited and Released Following Protest at Travis Air Force Base
In mid-March, the Fairfield Police Department became aware of a planned protest at Travis Air Force Base. The organizers communicated their intent to create a "human blockade" during the morning commute. This group has engaged in numerous similar protests previously.
The Fairfield Police Department initiated contact with the protest organizers to find a collaborative approach that would allow them to exercise their First Amendment rights while ensuring uninterrupted access to Travis Air Force Base, David Grant Medical Center, and the VA Clinic.
On the day of the planned protest, approximately 30 individuals appeared and, despite clear warnings from officers, entered the intersection of Parker Road and Airbase Parkway.
They proceeded to stand in the crosswalk and refused to yield the right-of-way to vehicles with a green light. Fairfield Police Officers issued lawful orders for the subjects to leave the roadway. Twelve people disregarded these orders and were subsequently taken into custody. The intersection was temporarily blocked for approximately 10 minutes while the arrests were conducted.
There were no reported injuries, and no force was used by officers. The arrested individuals were later cited and released with a pending court date next month.
