Reporting Requirements for Hotel Motel Tax Collections
Dear Hotel/Motel, Bed and Breakfasts (Airbnb) Owners and Managers,
The City of Sonora has been actively working with local groups that benefit from the hotel-motel occupancy tax revenues. Through these discussions, it has become clear that we need to improve the consistency of our tax reporting process to the State Comptroller’s Office.
Effective immediately, all hotel and motel businesses are required to provide a copy of the tax report submitted to the State Comptroller’s Office each month. This report, which is due on the 20th of each month, must also be submitted to Sonora City Hall for our records. This step is necessary to ensure uniformity and accuracy in our tax reporting.
Additionally, we want to remind you of the penalties and interest provisions outlined in Section 90-106 of the City of Sonora’s ordinance.
The municipal attorney has the authority to take legal action against any business that fails to file tax reports or remit collected taxes on time. Businesses found to be non-compliant may be subject to:
- Reasonable attorney fees incurred by the municipality.
- The cost of an audit (if taxes have been delinquent for at least two full municipal fiscal quarters).
- A penalty equal to 15% of the total amount of tax owed.
If you have any questions regarding this new reporting requirement, please do not hesitate to contact me at 325 387-2558.
