Wilmington Police have arrested two men in connection with a 2023 fatal shooting incident.
On August 28, 2023, at approximately 6:32 a.m., members of the Uniformed Services Division responded to the area of East 24th and North Pine Streets, in reference to a shooting incident. Upon arrival, police located a gunshot victim – 26-year-old Zaahir Thorton – who succumbed to his injuries. The case was assigned to Detective Derek Haines of the Criminal Investigations Division.
Through the course of his investigation, Detective Haines identified 26-year-old Nyzier Cannon-Wilson, and 25-year-old Aaron Watson as suspects. On March 31, 2025, the case was presented to the New Castle County Grand Jury, and an indictment was returned for Cannon-Wilson, and Watson, who were both committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on unrelated matters.
Cannon-Wilson has been charged with the following offenses:
- Murder (First Degree)
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
- Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited
- Conspiracy (First Degree)
He was arraigned in New Castle County Superior Court and remains committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.
Watson has been charged with the following offenses:
- Murder (First Degree)
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
- Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited
- Conspiracy (First Degree)
He was arraigned in New Castle County Superior Court and remains committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.
