Advisory

REMINDER: Jersey Avenue full closure begins tomorrow at 6 a.m.

As a reminder, Jersey Avenue will be closed in both directions starting TOMORROW, April 14, at 6 a.m. as the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) continues construction of the Rebuild by Design – Hudson River (RBDH) project’s Resist structure.

During this phase of construction, Jersey Avenue will be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic 24 hours a day between Harrison Street in Hoboken and 18th Street in Jersey City. The full closure is anticipated to last for approximately one month. Traffic entering and exiting Hoboken will be detoured onto Grove Street and Marin Boulevard/Henderson Street. Trucks will be directed to use northern roads in and out of the city via Rt. 495 and may exit from the south via Paterson Avenue/ Paterson Plank Road only.

Following the anticipated month-long full closure, one southbound lane of Jersey Avenue is expected to reopen to accommodate vehicles exiting Hoboken. Jersey Avenue is scheduled to fully reopen by the July 4th holiday.

To minimize disruptions, the City, in collaboration with NJDEP, Jersey City, and Hudson County, has implemented comprehensive traffic mitigation strategies, which include modified signal timing, adding extra lanes on Grove to accommodate more detoured vehicles, and posting signage to assist drivers with alternate routes. Hoboken police officers will be on site from 8 a.m. to midnight and Jersey City police will be on site 24/7. The project team will monitor traffic conditions on an ongoing basis and make necessary adjustments as necessary.

Additionally, ongoing projects in the southwestern quadrant of Hoboken that require road closures will be on pause during this phase of Rebuild by Design construction to help reduce traffic impacts.

Please note, that on Tuesday, April 15, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., there will also be periodic lane closures on Newark Street between Harrison Street and Grove Street, and on Harrison Street between Observer Highway and Newark Street. This will allow for the completion of striping activities to add extra lanes on parts of Newark Street. Police officers will be on site to help direct traffic through the work zone.

The Rebuild by Design project was initiated to protect Hoboken, and portions of Weehawken and Jersey City from storm surge flooding, following Hurricane Sandy which inundated Hoboken with over 500 million gallons of stormwater. When complete, the comprehensive flood protection system will remove approximately 80 percent of the City from the FEMA-designated flood plain helping to significantly reduce flood insurance rates for residents. The flood-resistant infrastructure will be integrated into the urban landscape with new community amenities.
