Basquez, Sampson Found Guilty of Charges from 2022 Shooting in Nebo
On Thursday, February 6, 2025, a McDowell County jury found 36-year-old Maynor Javier Yanes Basquez of Longview, NC, guilty of the following charges:
• (2 counts) Attempted First Degree Murder
• (6 counts) Discharge Weapon Occupied Dwelling
Basquez was sentenced to a minimum of 767 months active with a maximum of 983 months active.
Co-defendant Chad Michael Sampson of Hickory, NC, pleaded guilty to (6 counts) Discharge Weapon Occupied Dwelling. He received an active consolidated sentence of 73 months minimum to 100 months maximum.
In the early morning hours of October 10, 2022, two women from the Nebo community reported someone had fired multiple rounds into their residence while they slept. Several high-powered rifle casings and projectiles were found at the scene.
The investigation led McDowell County Sheriff’s Office detectives to the residence of Basquez in Longview, NC, where a rifle and ammunition were seized. Basquez was taken into custody by Catawba County authorities and Sampson by Burke County authorities.
Sheriff Ricky T. Buchanan stated he was grateful for the support of all agencies and expressed his thanks to MCSO staff as well.
“Our detectives and staff do an outstanding job,” said Sheriff Buchanan. “I’m proud of their dedication and the hard work they put in every day to protect our community. I’d also like to thank District Attorney Ted Bell and his team for their efforts in bringing this case to justice.”
Agencies that assisted with the investigation included the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, Hickory Police Department, Longview Police Department, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office and the NC State Highway Patrol.
