Year-long investigation leads to 4 arrests in drive by in Eastridge neighborhood.

Arrests Made in Drive-By Shooting Investigation Following Year-Long Effort
Amarillo, TX — April 14th, 2025 — After a year-long investigation, the Amarillo Police Department announced today the arrests of four individuals connected to a drive-by shooting that occurred on May 2nd, 2024, in the Eastridge neighborhood.
The shooting was a preplanned and coordinated attack targeting one individual at a residence where multiple people, including children, were present. Although no one was injured, a bullet narrowly missed an infant by approximately six inches.
The investigation was led by the Neighborhood Police Officers for the Eastridge neighborhood, who utilized a wide range of department resources, including department technological assets, surveillance, and numerous evidentiary warrants.
Through months of forensic analysis, interviews, and surveillance, investigators identified and charged the following individuals:
• Matthew Wayne Austin Jr, age 18, of Amarillo
• Joshua Michael Benavidez Jr, age 19, of Amarillo
• Saul Angel Castillo, age 18, of Amarillo
• Juan Angel Rueda Jr, age 18, of Amarillo
All four individuals now face multiple felony charges including Aggravated Assault, two counts of Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity, and Deadly Conduct Discharge Firearm.
This case demonstrates the persistence and commitment of the Amarillo Police Department, including our Neighborhood Police Officers, to pursue justice.
