The Wilmington Police Department is joining agencies across the country to observe National Public Safety Telecommunications Week from April 13-19.
 
Each year dating back to 1981, agencies have set aside a week to recognize telecommunications personnel in the public safety community across the country.
 
The Wilmington Police Department’s Communications Division provides 24-hour coverage to answer emergency calls and dispatch police officers throughout the City of Wilmington.
 
In 2024, the Division handled 101,570 calls for service – with call takers answering calls and gathering details, and dispatchers relaying information to police officers. Call takers and dispatchers are supported by supervisors who manage the team, fill in when needed and provide continuous training.
 
“As we observe National Public Safety Telecommunications Week each year, we are proud to recognize our dedicated staff, who work each and every day to serve our community,” said Lt. William Schmid, commanding officer of the WPD Communications Division. “As we always say – no call for service is too small or incident too large for our professionals to provide first-rate direction and support. Often these public servants go unnoticed behind the scenes, however, without them the effectiveness of our first responders would be diminished. I commend them for their unwavering dedication in all they do.”
 
Chief Wilfredo Campos also expressed his appreciation for our Communications Division staff.
 
“Members of our Communications Division are often the first point of contact for residents and visitors to Wilmington who are in need of help – and they serve as a critical link between those callers and our first responders,” said Chief Campos. “I applaud members of our team, and thank them for what they do each day to support our department and community.”
