Firefighters are conducting strategic firing operations around the BR Parkway near Deer Lick Gap. Expect additional smoke in this area.

On the Bee Rock Creek Fire in McDowell County, firefighters began strategic firing operations at noon today. Their goal is to reduce the amount of unburned fuel between the fire and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Firefighters use carefully planned strategic firing operations while weather conditions will keep fire behavior low. Smoke may remain in the area overnight.
From McDowell County Emergency Management:
Emergency managers continue to coordinate with forestry officials concerning the Bee Rock Creek Fire. Once officials determine it is safe to return to properties along Wild Acres Rd. the evacuation order will be lifted. There are no plans at this time to expand the order. Citizens should know that emergency managers will utilize the Emergency Alert System should an emergent situation develop with this fire.
