Wilmington Police have arrested a man on gun charges.
On April 21, at approximately 12:30 p.m., members of the Wilmington Police Special Operations Division Traffic Unit were in the area of East 30th and Jessup Streets, when they attempted to conduct a vehicle stop for an equipment violation. At this time, the vehicle disregarded and fled the area. A short time later, the vehicle was located in the unit block of Gordon Street, where the driver of the vehicle fled on foot. Following a brief foot pursuit, police took 40-year-old Ira Jones into custody without incident. Police recovered a loaded 9mm handgun, and 113 grams of marijuana.
Jones has been charged with the following offenses in addition to traffic violations:
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
- Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition by a Person Prohibited – Two Counts
- Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
- Tampering with Physical Evidence
- Disregarding a Police Officer’s Signal
- Resisting Arrest
He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $93,500 cash-only bail.
