Public Safety Director Miranda and Fire Chief Ortiz Announce Spring Fire Hydrant Inspections

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr., and Fire Chief Del Ortiz announce that the Fire Division has begun its Spring 2025 inspection of fire hydrants in the City of Newark through May 21, 2025.

“Fire hydrant inspections are critical in assisting us to plan for the first-due firefighters to an incident,” Director Miranda said. “I am pleased to report that every fire hydrant in Newark is being inspected to ensure they operate properly in the event of fire. I am also thankful that the use of wireless tablets will make the inspection process more efficient and cost-effective,” he added.

“The Newark Fire Division is the eyes and ears of the city’s Water Department regarding broken or poorly functioning hydrants requiring maintenance or replacement,” Chief Ortiz said. “During the inspection period, our members will open each hydrant. This may result in water coming through faucets being slightly discolored. The water should become clear after letting it run for a short time,” he said.

The tablets used for inspection are equipped with a GPS feature that allows fire personnel to wirelessly upload results of the inspections to a database along with a photo of each hydrant. Fire hydrants are also being visually inspected for missing caps, bolts, or other issues.

Hydrants requiring repairs will be reported to the Newark Water Department, which is responsible for the upkeep of fire hydrants in the city.
