CRIME PREVENTION TIPS - IDENTITY THEFT PREVENTION
The following information can help you avoid becoming a victim of identity theft:
- Reflect on your routine activities, such as withdrawing cash from an ATM, making online purchases, writing checks at the grocery store, and sending out your bills. While you may not think much about these daily transactions, an identity thief certainly does. Staying vigilant about your environment can help reduce your risk.
- It is essential to shred bank and credit card statements, along with pre-approved credit offers, as identity thieves are willing to rummage through your trash to obtain personal information. To protect yourself, promptly collect your mail and refrain from mailing bill payments from home, as thieves can intercept both your mail and financial details.
- Always retain your receipts and avoid leaving behind any from ATMs, credit cards, or gas stations.
- Be cautious about sharing your financial information; if a sales clerk or cashier requests your social security number or driver's license, inquire about the necessity of that information and review their privacy policy regarding data sharing.
- Refrain from disclosing personal financial information via phone, mail, or the Internet unless you initiated the communication. Stay vigilant of your surroundings, as identity thieves may attempt to observe you while using an ATM or conducting financial transactions on your personal devices, particularly in public settings.
- Exercise caution with emails, as identity thieves often send messages that mimic those from your bank or credit card company, requesting verification of your information, including your Social Security number or other sensitive data.
- Remember that legitimate institutions will never ask for personal information via email; if you receive such a request, contact your bank directly for clarification.
