Narrative:
On 04/30/2025, (S) Charles Law was arrested for criminal threats, brandishing a firearm, and negligent discharge of a firearm.

At about 7:46 AM, patrol deputies from the Sheriff’s Fillmore Station and Headquarters Station responded to the 8000 block of Mistletoe Road located in the unincorporated area of Santa Paula near Steckel Park for a report of an assault with a deadly weapon that had just occurred.   Patrol personnel and detectives from the Fillmore Bureau of Investigation arrived on scene, confirmed crimes had occurred, and quickly identified the suspect as (S) Charles Law, who lives a short distance from the location of the incident.

The investigation revealed Law confronted the two adult victims who were parked on public land a short distance from Law’s residence.  Law brandished a firearm at two adult male victims, threatened them, and negligently discharged a firearm into the air to get the two males to leave the area.  Ultimately, detectives and patrol resources contacted Law near the 8000 block of Mupu Road in unincorporated Santa Paula.  Law was arrested for Penal Code § 246.3(a) – [Negligent Discharge of a Firearm], Penal Code § 422 – [Criminal Threats], and Penal Code § 417(a)(2) – [Brandishing a Firearm].
Detectives obtained a search warrant for Law’s residence.  During the search warrant service, detectives seized evidence linking Law to the crimes.  Law was transported to the Pre-Trial Detention Facility and booked for the aforementioned offenses pending court proceedings.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office is committed to responding to public concerns in a manner that builds confidence in our agency and strengthens relationships to empower businesses and residents to be the eyes and ears of the community.

Dangers of Negligent Discharges of Firearms
Firing a firearm into the air is extremely dangerous and potentially deadly.  When a bullet is discharged upward, it eventually returns to the ground at high velocity, posing a serious risk of injury or death to bystanders.  Unlike controlled shooting at a target, celebratory or reckless gunfire lacks a safe trajectory, making it unpredictable and hazardous.  In many regions, such as Ventura County, this act is illegal and considered criminal negligence due to the harm it can cause.  Public safety agencies strongly warn against such behavior to prevent tragic and avoidable accidents.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank members of the public for their on-going support and due diligence in providing information to assist our agency in solving crimes. We are better at what we do because of our community partnerships.
