IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE FAIR HAVEN POLICE DEPARTMENT
Don’t Be a Victim of Scams
Scammers are constantly trying to take advantage of unsuspecting individuals, especially in times of crisis. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is a reliable, up-to-date resource on all current scams operating across the country. A majority of these scams are carried out through robo-calls, where the scammer may ask for sensitive personal information such as bank account details, social security numbers, or convince victims to wire money by purchasing gift cards.
Some scammers have gone so far as to remotely access victims' personal computers, gaining access to banking and cryptocurrency accounts. Additionally, there have been reports of fraudulent mail claiming to be from legitimate institutions like banks, the Social Security Administration, and even the FTC itself. These fraudulent mailings often include phone numbers that, when called, prompt the victim to allow the scammer to access their computer or even instruct them to send money in order to avoid being fined or jailed.
Personal email accounts are also targeted by scammers, who often have access to private information, making their emails appear legitimate and trustworthy.
Please share this message with your family and friends, especially with senior relatives, as they are frequently targeted by these types of scams. If you have any concerns or need to report a scam, you can reach out to the Fair Haven Police Department for guidance and assistance.
Stay vigilant, protect your information, and remember: legitimate agencies will never ask for sensitive personal details via unsolicited phone calls or emails.
