Update to SMPD Checkpoint

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 4, 2025

Santa Maria, Calif. – The Santa Maria Police Department conducted a DUI checkpoint on May 3, 2025, resulting in four drivers arrested on suspicion of DUI. The checkpoint was held in the northbound lanes of the 1400 block of South Broadway, at the intersection of Broadway and Plaza Drive, from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

During the operation:

  • 4 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

  • 8 drivers were cited for driving without a license.

  • 710 vehicles passed through the checkpoint.

  • 92 drivers were screened.

While screening vehicles, one driver failed to stop for officers and fled the checkpoint at a high rate of speed. Officers located the vehicle a short time later after it had been involved in a traffic collision. The driver fled the scene but was located, detained, and found to be on parole. He was arrested for hit and run (20002(a) VC and resisting or obstructing officers (148 PC).

The Santa Maria Police Department remains committed to removing impaired drivers from the road. Driving under the influence is not only a serious safety risk but also carries significant legal and financial consequences.

Drivers facing a first-time DUI conviction can expect an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license.

Additional DUI and driver’s license checkpoints will be conducted in the coming months as part of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety.

Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
