New Jersey E-Bike, E-Scooter, And Motorized Bike Laws and Regulations
As reported on May 3rd, Gloucester Township Police is investigating a serious motor vehicle crash involving an electric bicycle, or commonly known as an E-Bike: https://gtpolice.com/news/article/2222
We ask parents and adult riders to educate yourself on the New Jersey laws and regulation involving low speed E-Bike's and E-Scooters, as well as motorized (electric and gas) bicycles: https://njbikeped.org/micromobility/
Low-Speed Electric Bicycles:
-Must follow all laws applicable to bicycles https://njbikeped.org/bicycle-laws/
-20 mph max speed
-750 watts or less
-May be parked on sidewalks without blocking pedestrian traffic
-No license, insurance, or registration required
-Helmet use is required for those under age 17
-May be pedal-assist or throttle powered
Low-Speed Electric Scooters:
-Must follow all laws applicable to bicycles https://njbikeped.org/bicycle-laws/
-19 mph max speed
-May be parked on sidewalks without blocking pedestrian traffic
-Riding on the sidewalk is up to each municipality and can be regulated by ordinance
-No license, insurance, or registration required
-Must follow all laws applicable to bicycles
-Helmet use is required for those under age 17
Motorized Bicycles:
-Electric pedal bicycles that can achieve speeds between 20 and 28 mph
-Gas pedal bicycle with maximum piston displacement under 50 cc

-Helmet use is required for ALL AGES
