SUMMARY: On Thursday, May 8, 2025, at about 11:33 p.m., a deputy from the Morongo Basin Station observed a silver Hyundai Elantra traveling eastbound on Twentynine Palms Highway near Barberry Avenue without headlights. The deputy initiated a traffic enforcement stop and contacted the driver, Robert Richardson.
During the traffic stop, the deputy attempted to detain Richardson when he reached for a weapon located inside his vehicle. Richardson proceeded to grab the deputy's firearm, and after a struggle, Richardson and the deputy disengaged. Richardson entered into his vehicle and fled the location, which led to a pursuit.
Richardson repeatedly drove on the opposite side of the road during the pursuit and drove in the direct path of six vehicles. The pursuit ended near the intersection of Twentynine Palms Highway and California Avenue in Joshua Tree.
Richardson exited the vehicle and took a juvenile out of the vehicle. Richardson held the child in between law enforcement officers and himself and made homicidal threats towards the child. Deputies separated the juvenile from Richardson, and after a struggle, deputies detained Richardson without further incident.
