Nature of Incident: Citizen’s Academy Graduation, Class #40
Location: Thousand Oaks Police Department, 2101 E. Olsen Rd. Thousand Oaks
Date & Time: February 2025 through May 2025
Unit(s) Responsible: Thousand Oaks Community Resources Unit
Narrative:
The Thousand Oaks Police Department, Community Resources Unit, is pleased to announce the completion of Citizens’ Academy Class 40.

Twenty-one participants completed a twelve-week course designed to give citizens an overview of the police department’s function and operational procedures. The goal is to educate the public on the day-to-day operations of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and teach them how resources are deployed.

During the twelve weeks, participants were able to interact with and ask questions of a variety of subject matter experts. These experts were a combination of sworn, professional, and volunteer staff members. Topics varied weekly and included speakers from our Investigations Unit, Directed and Special Enforcement Units, Narcotics Unit, Human Trafficking detectives, Tactical Units, Civil Unit, Volunteers in Policing, Search and Rescue, Disaster Assistance Response Team, Explorer Advisors, and Crisis Intervention Team. Attendees also had the chance to meet our four-legged partners from the Mounted Unit, K-9 Unit, Search and Rescue K-9’s, and Ventura County District Attorney Courthouse Facility Dogs.

In addition to these guest speakers, attendees participated in field trip tours to our Sheriff’s Communications Center, Aviation Unit, Sheriff’s Regional Training Center, Pre-Trial Detention Facility, and Crime Lab.

The next Citizen’s Academy is set to start August 20th, 2025. The course is free and will be held every Wednesday from 6 to 9:00 p.m. in the Thousand Oaks Police Community Room, with the exception of field trip days.
