Incident Summary

On 05/09/2025 at approximately 7:24 PM, the Petaluma Police Department received a 911 call stating a male subject had attacked an unknown person and was seen with a handgun and knife. The caller provided a detailed description of the suspect, who was seen fleeing into the Target Shopping Center after the altercation. They further described the firearm as a black handgun.

The reporting party stated the victim of the incident had been attacked while on the pedestrian overcrossing and had fled the area after warning the reporting party to stay away from the suspect. The suspect was then seen running into the Sonoma-Marin Airporter parking lot near the Petaluma Fairgrounds.

Petaluma Police Officers arrived on scene within minutes and located the suspect, later identified as Jimmy Soriano-Vazquez, in the parking lot near the Petaluma Library. Officers gave commands to Soriano, who refused and ran from officers towards Payran Street. Throughout the pursuit, officers gave him several warnings and commands to stop, advising force may be used, but he continued to flee  westbound on E. Washington Street from Payran Street.

Due to several factors, which included the report that Soriano was in possession of a firearm, may have used a firearm in the commission of a crime, was fleeing from officers, along with other factors, a Taser device was deployed, which effectively stopped Soriano after contact was made. After being stopped by the Taser deployment, he was subsequently detained without any further incident.

At the time of his arrest, he did not have the alleged firearm with him, and it was suspected that he may have discarded it over the various areas he had traveled through prior to officers locating him. Petaluma Police K-9 officers responded to the scene to conduct an article search with their K-9’s to help locate the firearm. Concluding an extensive search, Petaluma officers were unable to locate it.

Several witnesses met with Petaluma officers and identified Soriano as the suspect in this incident.
Soriano is currently on active parole for Assault with a Deadly Weapon other than a firearm and is a known gang participant.

Soriano was treated at the scene by the Petaluma Fire Department and transported to a local hospital for standard medical clearance.

He was arrested and later transported to the Sonoma County Jail and booked for the following offenses:

3056 PC- Parole Violation
148(a)(1) PC- Obstruct Officers.

The Petaluma Police Department is actively looking for the original victim in this investigation and is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the Petaluma Police Department in reference to Petaluma case PE25-0001612.
