CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
While being aware of your surroundings could prevent you from becoming a victim of a crime, did you know May is WILDFIRE awareness month? The following information can help prevent a wildfire before it happens:
Establish and Sustain a Defensible Perimeter:
- Remove combustible vegetation by clearing away dead plants, grass, weeds, and overgrown brush within a 30-100-foot radius of your residence.
- Trim trees to ensure branches are at least 10 feet away from chimneys, roofs, and other trees. Manage debris by eliminating dead leaves, pine needles, and other refuse from your yard, roof, and gutters.
- Prune flammable plants and shrubs located near windows and decks.
- Clear under decks by removing flammable vegetation and items from beneath decks, balconies, and stairways.
Use Equipment Responsibly:
- Be mindful of Red Flag warnings and follow guidelines on burning and the use of power equipment.
- Operate power equipment such as lawnmowers and weed eaters cautiously to prevent sparks.
Practice Campfire Safety:
- Choose a safe, flat, open location away from flammable materials.
- Clear a 10-foot radius down to the soil, removing all combustible materials.
- Create a fire bed by forming a shallow depression in the center of the cleared area, encircled by rocks, and prepare your wood.
- Always stay with your fire and ensure it is completely extinguished before leaving.
- Limit the size of the fire to what is necessary for your specific needs.
Other Important Steps:
- Monitor weather conditions for Red Flag warnings that indicate high fire danger.
- Avoid activities that may produce sparks.
- Prepare for potential evacuation by developing a plan and having a go-bag ready.
- Stay informed by receiving text alerts regarding wildfires in your vicinity and essential safety tips.
