City Crews Complete River Clean up in City Portion of the San Benito River
HOLLISTER, CALIFORNIA – May 20, 2025- A three-day (May 15-17) coordinated cleanup operation aimed at restoring a heavily impacted section of the San Benito riverbed has concluded successfully.
The operation, led by the Hollister Police Department Code Enforcement and Public Works Staff in partnership with San Benito County and local environmental and public safety organizations, targeted the removal of debris, hazardous materials, and abandoned vehicles from a dry riverbed area previously occupied by individuals experiencing homelessness. Portions of the river cleanup were in the San Benito County jurisdiction and portions in the City of Hollister jurisdiction.
The operation resulted in the removal of significant waste and contamination in the City of Hollister jurisdiction, including: (see before and after pictures)
7 abandoned vehicles
9 dismantled vehicles, including 2 confirmed stolen cars
9 bicycles
1 boat
11 mattresses
31 shopping carts
8-10 large trash bins with trash, debris and metal parts
The riverbed had become a site of illegal encampments, leading to environmental degradation and public safety concerns. Crews worked carefully to clear refuse, contaminated material, human feces and structures while ensuring individuals encountered during the cleanup were offered access to housing, addiction recovery, and mental health services. Outreach workers were on-site throughout the operation, and services were accepted by some individuals.
"This was a necessary and carefully coordinated operation to help restore the health of our waterways while showing compassion to those in need," said Code Enforcement Supervisor Sergeant Matt Weiss. "Keeping our rivers clean isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about protecting our drinking water, wildlife, and community health."
The city of Hollister reaffirms its commitment to balancing environmental protection with humane support for vulnerable populations. Follow-up efforts in coordination with the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office will focus on monitoring and maintaining the cleared area and working with social services to provide ongoing assistance to those in transition.
We want to thank the multiple people and organizations that assisted in this endeavor such as: Hollister Public works personnel, county social services departments as well as the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office and the Hollister Code Enforcement Division.
