TRAVEL ALERT: US 550 closed Sat 5/24, 7:30am-1:30pm between Purgatory & Silverton for bicycle race. via CDOT

US 550 Closure – Saturday, May 24 
US 550 will be closed between Purgatory Ski Resort and Silverton from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic.

If you are traveling south from Silverton to Durango on Saturday morning, plan to leave Silverton by 6:30 a.m. to pass Purgatory before the road closes at 7:30 a.m.

Use alternate routes if traveling during the closure window.

Iron Horse Bicycle Classic – Traffic Impacts on Saturday, May 24

  • US 550 closes between Purgatory and Silverton from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
    If heading to Silverton, leave Durango by 6:45 a.m. to pass Purgatory before the closure. Purgatory is about 25 miles north of Durango (35–45 minute drive).

  • During the race: Southbound traffic between Hermosa and Durango will detour via County Road 203 and Animas View Drive. Northbound traffic to Purgatory will remain on US 550 with traffic control and signage.

  • Expect delays: Up to 20 minutes at Deer Creek (MP 59.3) due to ongoing rockfall mitigation.
  • Brief delays in Durango on North Main Avenue as 600 cyclists depart at 7:15 a.m., followed by 2,000 more at 8:00 a.m.
