For Immediate Release
SUBJECT: Felony Assault Suspect Arrested
LOCATION: 3700 Block of Hoover Street, Redwood City
DATE/TIME: May 22, 2025, Approximately 4:16 P.M.
On May 21, 2025, Redwood City Police Officers responded to a 911 call reporting a family disturbance between an adult son and his elderly mother at a residence in the 3700 block of Hoover Street. Upon arrival, officers learned that 36-year-old Redwood City resident Juan Carlos CamposBerrios had armed himself with a hammer and threatened his 66-year-old mother. CamposBerrios also caused extensive property damage, including vandalizing his mother’s vehicle and destroying items inside the home’s kitchen, resulting in thousands of dollars in damage. He fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival and was not located at that time. Fortunately, no physical injuries were reported.
On May 22, 2025, at approximately 4:16 P.M., family members notified police that CamposBerrios had returned to the residence. Officers responded immediately, established a perimeter, and advised nearby residents to shelter in place for safety. CamposBerrios was believed to be hiding in a detached garage on the property.
Members of the Redwood City Police Department’s Crisis Negotiation Unit responded and made numerous announcements in an attempt to gain voluntary compliance. CamposBerrios refused to exit. A small drone was then deployed to safely enter the garage and confirm his presence. After a brief period of negotiation, CamposBerrios exited the garage and was taken into custody without incident.
CamposBerrios was booked into the San Mateo County Maguire Correctional Facility on the following charges:
- Penal Code 245(a)(1) – Assault with a Deadly Weapon
- Penal Code 368(b)(1) – Elder Abuse
- Penal Code 594(a)(2) – Felony Vandalism
- Outstanding unrelated arrest warrant
The circumstances surrounding this incident remain under investigation. At this time, it appears to be an isolated event involving family-related conflict within the residence. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Redwood City Police Department’s non-emergency line at (650) 780-7100.
