Bicycle Safety Month Reminders

As Bicycle Safety Month comes to a close, the Berkeley Police Department reminds everyone that road safety is a shared responsibility—every day of the year.

With warmer weather and more people biking for commuting, exercise, or recreation, it’s critical that drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and delivery personnel stay alert and follow the rules of the road to keep our community safe.

Berkeley continues to expand its network of bike lanes and bicycle boulevards to create safer, more accessible options for people who bike. These routes are designed to improve safety, reduce traffic stress, and encourage more sustainable modes of travel. Cyclists are encouraged to use them whenever possible.

Safety Tips for Drivers:

  • Obey the speed limit and slow down, especially when approaching intersections, schools, or crosswalks.
  • Be vigilant for bicyclists and pedestrians, especially when turning or opening your car door near bike paths or sidewalks.
  • Give bicyclists space. California law requires drivers to provide at least 3 feet of clearance when passing a cyclist, and a full lane change when safe to do so.
  • Avoid distractions and never text, eat or drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Do not block bicycle lanes. Parking or stopping in a designated bike lane forces cyclists into traffic and creates serious safety risks.
Important Reminder for Delivery Drivers:

Whether you’re delivering packages, groceries, or working for a rideshare company, you are not exempt from traffic laws. Blocking bike lanes is dangerous and illegal. Please park legally, avoid stopping in bicycle lanes or crosswalks, and always drive with caution. You are not exempt from traffic laws.

Safety Tips for People on Bikes:
  • Use lights and reflectors at night to stay visible.
  • Wear a properly fitted helmet. While helmets are required for riders under 18, helmets reduce injury at any age.
  • Follow the rules of the road. Ride in the same direction as traffic, signal turns, and stop at all stop signs and red lights.
  • Yield to pedestrians at marked or unmarked crosswalks.
Berkeley’s goal is to build a city where biking and walking are safe, convenient, and accessible for everyone.  That requires mutual respect on the road and a commitment to safety from all who use it.
