Here’s how to recognize and protect yourself from these types of scams:

- Check the sender. Legitimate government agencies do not contact you from random email addresses.

- Look for urgency. Scammers use scare tactics like “Final Notice” or “Penalties Begin May 30” to pressure you into acting without thinking.

- Verify links. Always navigate to official government websites by typing the URL directly into your browser: https://www.dmv.ca.gov

- Watch for red flags. Threats of prosecution, credit score impacts, and vague legal citations are classic scam tactics.

If you believe you are a victim of this scam, please contact the Hillsborough Police Department at 650-375-7470.
