Bank Robber Arrested in Escondido
 
ESCONDIDO – On June 4th, 2025, at about 10:37 AM, an adult male suspect, wearing a mask, entered the US Bank on the 2300 block of East Valley Parkway in Escondido.  The suspect passed a note to the teller stating he had a gun and demanding money.  The teller complied, and the suspect fled with the money.  Witnesses observed that the suspect was driving a black Toyota Prius. 
 
Officers responded to the 911 call and immediately flooded the area to search for the suspect vehicle.  A short time later, an Escondido patrol officer observed a possible matching black Toyota Prius driving in the area of Rose Street and Valley Parkway in Escondido.  Additional units responded, and a high-risk stop was conducted, during which the driver and only occupant was detained.  Witnesses identified that subject as the bank robber.  The stolen bank money, demand note, and mask were all located inside the vehicle.  The male was identified as Gary Smyers, a 77-year-old resident of Escondido.  Smyers was later booked at the Vista Detention Facility for 211 PC (Robbery).     
 
Escondido police detectives are being assisted in this investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Hombre Arrestado por Robo Bancario en Escondido
ESCONDIDO – El 4 de junio de 2025, aproximadamente a las 10:37 a.m., un hombre adulto con el rostro cubierto ingresó al banco US Bank ubicado en la cuadra 2300 de East Valley Parkway en Escondido. El sospechoso entregó una nota al cajero en la que indicaba que estaba armado y exigía dinero. El cajero cumplió con la exigencia y el sospechoso huyó con el dinero. Testigos observaron que el sospechoso conducía un Toyota Prius negro.
Los oficiales respondieron a la llamada al 911 y de inmediato saturaron el área en busca del vehículo sospechoso. Poco tiempo después, un oficial de patrulla de Escondido observó un Toyota Prius negro que coincidía con la descripción, circulando por la zona de Rose Street y Valley Parkway en Escondido. Varias unidades respondieron y realizaron una detención de alto riesgo, durante la cual el conductor —único ocupante del vehículo— fue detenido. Testigos identificaron a ese sujeto como el autor del robo. Dentro del vehículo se encontraron el dinero robado, la nota de amenaza y la máscara. El hombre fue identificado como Gary Smyers, un residente de Escondido de 77 años de edad. Smyers fue ingresado posteriormente en el Centro de Detención de Vista por el delito de robo (Código Penal 211 PC).
Detectives del Departamento de Policía de Escondido están siendo asistidos en esta investigación por el Buró Federal de Investigaciones (FBI).
