Update:
An HC-130J Super Hercules aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak conducted an overflight Sunday of the Morning Midas, confirming its location at 12:40 p.m. to be approximately 218 miles south of Amatignak Island, approximately 11 miles within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone, with no signs of pollution or sheen.
The safety of responders, maritime traffic and the public is our top priority and the Coast Guard is in close communication with Zodiac Maritime, the manager of the Morning Midas, as they develop their salvage and safety plans with Resolve Marine. The Coast Guard is sharing their expertise to inform these plans to help ensure the plans are as safe and effective as possible.
Zodiac Maritime has mobilized 3 vessel crews to the area, which are scheduled to arrive on scene at different dates within the next two weeks, with the first vessel expected to arrive at the beginning of this week.
The current on-scene weather is 10-15 knot winds and 3-to-5 foot seas. Weather forecasts indicate a rise in winds and seas by Tuesday.
The Coast Guard will continue to monitor the vessel’s location and condition in a variety of ways including regular overflights and using information relayed by vessel crews navigating in the area. The Coast Guard has been conducting drift analyses of the vessel, incorporating drift analysis information from NOAA. As of the most recent update, the vessel was drifting east at 1 knot.
We will continue to keep the public informed by publishing the most up-to-date information about this response to the Coast Guard District 17’s X.com account (@uscgAlaska) to ensure the public is fully aware of the situation and response efforts.
