E-Bike Safety Tips

As electric bikes (e-bikes) become more popular, it is crucial to understand the rules and safety guidelines to ensure everyone rides responsibly and legally. Here is what you need to know:
⚖️ E-Bike Classifications in New Jersey

  • Class 1: Pedal-assist only; motor stops at 20 mph.
  • Class 2: Throttle-assisted; motor stops at 20 mph.
  • Class 3: Pedal or throttle-assisted; motor stops at 28 mph.
Class 1 & 2: Treated like bicycles — no license, registration, or insurance needed.
⚠️ Class 3: Considered motorized — license, registration, and insurance required.

Helmets Save Lives
  • Under 17: Helmet required. 17+: Helmet required for Class 3 e-bikes.
Respect Public Spaces
  • Township Ordinance 500-39: No e-bikes or wheeled devices on sidewalks in busy areas like Broadway, Bloomfield Ave, East Main St from West Main St. to Bloomfield Ave. and Diamond Spring Road from Broadway to Second Ave.
  • Township Ordinance 380-17: Do NOT ride e-bikes on parks, fields, or playgrounds; they are for foot traffic only. Respect shared spaces.
E-Bike Safety Tips
  • Always wear a helmet — properly fitted.
  • Be visible — use lights, reflectors, and bright clothes.
  • Obey traffic laws — stop signs, signals, and right-of-way.
  • Stay alert — avoid distractions.
  • Use bike lanes — where available.
