OPD’s Summer Safety Plan 2025
Today, Oakland Police Department (OPD) Chief Floyd Mitchell and members of the executive team unveiled the department's Summer Safety Plan. Starting tomorrow, residents and visitors in Oakland will see an increased police presence throughout the city as we launch our Summer Safety Plan. This initiative aims to reduce violent crime by implementing effective crime prevention strategies.
Currently, crime is down in nearly all categories, with significant decreases in shootings and homicides, as well as a 41% reduction in robberies. These reductions build upon the declines we saw in 2024. Our goal with the Summer Safety Plan is to continue this momentum by enhancing community safety through a combination of proactive policing, strong community partnerships, and effective incident response.
We will leverage our Ceasefire Division, a proven strategy that has effectively reduced homicides and non-fatal shootings. Officers assigned to our Special Resource Section (SRS) will work with Ceasefire to provide this additional safety coverage.
Existing Foot Patrol officers will supplement our Patrol Division to improve response times while enhancing visibility in our business districts. Our Vice Unit will conduct undercover operations and long-term investigations to arrest individuals driving the demand for human trafficking in Oakland.
OPD's Traffic Enforcement Unit will collaborate with staff from the Real-Time Operations Center and the Crime Gun Intelligence Center to implement data-driven, targeted enforcement. We will partner with the United States Marshals, California Highway Patrol, and our local law enforcement agencies.
OPD will continue to coordinate with prosecutors from the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, the State Attorney General, and the Office of the United States Attorneys to ensure that those arrested are held accountable.
Part of the Summer Safety Plan includes our deployment for the Juneteenth holiday. OPD will collaborate with all city departments to facilitate public safety efforts around Lake Merritt. Officers will be ready to issue citations and make arrests when necessary. The goal is to create a safe and family-friendly environment for all attendees.
Residents and businesses near Lake Merritt should be aware of vehicle traffic and parking restrictions throughout the day on June 19. Please plan accordingly to account for potential travel delays and restricted access. We appreciate the public's cooperation and support to ensure that the 2025 celebration is safe, respectful, and peaceful for everyone.
Working together, we will reduce crime and create a safer environment for all of Oakland.
