Statement Regarding Protest Incident at Downtown Intersection
Statement Regarding Protest Incident at Downtown Intersection:
For Immediate Release by Community Engagement Liaison Kelsey McCarthy
Monday, January 16,2025
The Petaluma Police Department is investigating an incident that occurred during a demonstration on Saturday at the intersection of Western Ave and Petaluma Blvd S.
The event, which drew hundreds of participants and remained peaceful for the majority of the day, involved a concerning interaction between a vehicle and pedestrians in the crosswalk.
At one point during the demonstration, a group of pedestrians entered and occupied the crosswalk while the signal displayed a green light for vehicle traffic. A truck proceeded through the intersection at that time, resulting in a situation that understandably sparked strong concern in the community. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The involved driver reported the incident to the department, is cooperating with the investigation, and has been interviewed. All available evidence, including video footage and witness accounts, is being examined to determine whether any criminal violations are appropriate.
In the meantime, we want to take this opportunity to reiterate the following:
🚗 - Drivers, even with a green light, are legally obligated to yield to anyone lawfully in a crosswalk. Driving toward pedestrians, particularly families with children, is dangerous and may violate multiple sections of the California Vehicle Code.
🚶- Pedestrians, including demonstrators, also have a responsibility to cross lawfully and avoid entering the roadway when vehicles have the legal right-of-way, especially outside designated crossing periods.
It’s on all of us. Everyone, whether on foot or behind the wheel, must prioritize safety and exercise good judgment for themselves and our community. By practicing pedestrian, traffic, and protest safety, you can help ensure our streets remain safe.
