US Marshals Arrest Attempted Murder of Police Officer Suspect
South Brunswick Police Department Chief Raymond Hayducka and North Brunswick Police Chief Joseph Battaglia announced the arrest of a suspect wanted for attempted murder of a police officer. Luis Duval-Jimenez, age 31 of New Brunswick, was taken into custody by the United States Marshals Service early Wednesday in North Jersey following a months-long manhunt. Mr. Duval-Jimenez has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer, resisting arrest, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
The charges are a result of an incident that took place on May 15, 2025. At 12:35 pm, North Brunswick officers were monitoring a hotel room at Hotel Vincenza at 3793 Route 1 in South Brunswick, looking for Mr. Duval-Jimenez. He was wanted as part of an extensive investigation into car thefts and fraud in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Mr. Duval-Jimenez left his hotel room and got into the driver’s seat of a Honda Accord that was in the parking lot. Officers approached the Honda Accord and were attempting to take Mr. Duval-Jimenez into custody. Mr. Duval-Jimenez accelerated his Honda Accord and rammed the police vehicle as North Brunswick Police Lieutenant Frank Vitelli was exiting the car, pinning his leg in the doorframe. North Brunswick Captain Cory Harris attempted to open the driver’s side door of the Honda to stop Mr. Duval-Jimenez from ramming the police vehicle. As the Honda driver’s side door opened, a loaded handgun dropped out onto the parking lot. Mr. Duval-Jimenez was able to drive his vehicle out of the hotel parking lot after he rammed the police vehicle. Lieutenant Vitelli was transported by South Brunswick EMS to RWJUH. He suffered a broken ankle and continues to recover.
After the vehicle fled the parking lot, South Brunswick officers located and arrested two people connected to the assault on the officer. Angelica Hernandez-Mayrena, age 25 of New Brunswick, was located nearby on Deans Lane, and Bryan Sanchez, age 20 of New Brunswick, was located along Route 1. Hernandez-Mayrena was charged with criminal trespass, and Sanchez was charged with hindering the apprehension of another. They were both released on a summons.
Mr. Duval-Jimenez is lodged at the Middlesex County Correction Center pending his initial court appearance. Chief Hayducka and Chief Battaglia thanked the US Marshals Service and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office for all their assistance.
