Jersey Ave. to reopen fully this weekend; NJDEP to host community meeting on 15th Street construction

The City of Hoboken today announced Jersey Avenue between Harrison Street in Hoboken and 18th Street in Jersey City, will fully re-open in the morning hours of Saturday, June 21, following the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s (NJDEP) installation of underground infrastructure for a sliding flood gate across Jersey Avenue as part of the Rebuild by Design – Hudson River (RBDH) project’s Resist structure.

The Resist element will help prevent storm surge flooding from the Hudson River as seen during Hurricane Sandy which inundated the City of Hoboken with over 500 million gallons of water causing more than $100 million in private property damage and $10 million in public property damage.

The RBDH project is a comprehensive flood protection system designed to safeguard portions of Hoboken, Jersey City, and Weehawken against storm surge while integrating flood-resistant infrastructure with new community amenities. In southern Hoboken, the Resist structure will be integrated into the urban landscape taking the form of wayfinding signage, planters, seating, public art, and more.

For more information about the RBDH project, go to https://dep.nj.gov/floodresilience/rebuild-by-design-hudson-river/

The NJDEP has announced it will host a virtual community meeting, to be held tentatively on June 26 at 6 p.m., to discuss the next phase of construction which will require the closure of 15th Street from Park Avenue to Bloomfield Street to vehicular through-traffic starting in July.

Temporary curb use changes, such as new pick-up and drop-off zones for local schools and designated loading zones for deliveries and resident shuttles, will also be implemented.

More information regarding the specific work, schedule, and associated mitigation measures will be released in the coming days.
