Advisory

PSEG: Extreme heat is expected. Take steps now to prepare.

The National Weather Service is predicting the first significant heat wave of the season, with temperatures in the upper 90s to over 100 degrees this week. Also, above-average temperatures are forecasted across the Mid-Atlantic this summer, which can increase heat-related illnesses, energy use and power outages. PSE&G is prepared and encourages customers to take steps now to stay safe, conserve energy and manage their bills.

PSE&G is prepared

High temperatures and high demand for power can put real stress on the electric system. PSE&G works throughout the year to ensure our operations and transmission and distribution systems are prepared, and our workforce is ready to deliver for our customers no matter what the weather brings. We are responsible for delivering power to our customers and we take this responsibility very seriously. Each year, PSE&G invests to strengthen and modernize our system – from the large transmission lines that bring the power to the substations to the wires that lead down the street to your home and business.

PSE&G relies on and expects the regional grid operator, PJM, to ensure the flow of adequate electric supply to meet customer demand all year long and when extreme weather hits – like the upcoming heatwave. PJM’s responsibility is especially critical in New Jersey where approximately 35% of our power comes from outside the state.

Staying safe in extreme heat

  • Stay hydrated; avoid alcohol and caffeine
  • Avoid overexertion, especially between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.
  • If your home is too hot, go to a building with air conditioning or a cooling center
  • Know the signs of heat exhaustion and act quickly
  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and avoid dark colors

Save energy and money

It’s important to understand that the amount of electricity needed to cool your house to 75 degrees when it’s 90 degrees outside is 125% higher than when it’s 85 degrees outside. And, the amount of electricity needed to cool your house to 75 degrees when it’s 95 outside is 300% higher than when it’s 85 outside. That’s why hot weather often leads to increased energy use as we run our air conditioners more.

To help customers manage summer usage and energy costs, PSE&G has a number of energy efficiency programs. There are also a variety of payment assistance options for customers who are struggling to pay their bill.

If you’re an electric customer with a smart meter, MyMeter provides you with a detailed view of how you use electricity as well as helpful energy-saving tools and resources. You can set usage thresholds and receive alerts by text, email or both.

You can start saving energy and money right now by following these simple tips:
