Advisory

Extreme heat warning continues; City outdoor rec cancelled; Senior room activities cancelled through tomorrow

As the extreme heat warning and air quality alert continue in Hoboken and the surrounding areas, all outdoor recreation programming organized by the Division of Recreation is cancelled for today, Tuesday, June 24.

Due to mechanical issues with air conditioning system, the senior room on the first floor of the Multi-Service Center, 124 Grand St., is temporarily closed and all senior activities are cancelled for today and tomorrow, while repairs are made.

Seniors without AC can utilize Hoboken Housing Authority's (HHA) cooling centers, set up at the following HHA community rooms:

  • 220 Adams St.
  • 221 Jackson St.
  • 311 13th St.
  • 411 Marshall St.
  • 455 9th St.

In addition, Iron Body Fitness has cancelled Fitness in the Park this evening and the City of Hoboken’s Division of Cultural Affairs and Hoboken Pride Advisory Committee’s Pride Month Family Drag Bingo event with Harmonica Sunbeam is being moved indoors to the ResilienCity Park Community Room, 1201 Madison St. at 6:30 p.m. Space is limited.

Residents are reminded that the extreme heat and humidity being experienced in our region significantly increases the potential for heat related illnesses, especially for the most vulnerable. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, and please check on their vulnerable neighbors.

Hudson County has opened a daytime cooling center for those in need at the Naval Reserve Building, 53 South Hackensack Ave., Kearny. The center is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week, through Aug. 31. The County provides bus transportation to the center at a pick-up location at Observer Highway and Park Avenue between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Hoboken Shelter is also serving as a county cooling center for the unhoused from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
