Shoplifting Suspect Located During Area Check and Arrested for Theft at a Retail Store

LOCATION: Petco, 13319 Main Street, Hesperia
SUSPECT(S): Chase Hunter Gross, 34-years-old, transient of Hesperia

SUMMARY:
On Monday, June 23, 2025, at approximately 8:45 p.m., deputies with the Hesperia Police Department responded to Petco, located at 13319 Main Street in Hesperia for a reported shoplifting.
Investigators learned the suspect concealed merchandise under his clothing while inside Petco and fled without paying. Deputies conducted an area check and located the suspect near Main Street and Escondido Avenue. Deputies attempted to detain the suspect, but he fled on foot, leading deputies on a foot pursuit across Escondido Avenue, into a nearby restaurant parking lot. Deputies quickly apprehended the suspect, recovered the stolen merchandise, and returned it to Petco.
Deputies located illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia, several stolen credit cards, and stolen driver's licenses in the suspect's possession. Deputies discovered the suspect, Chase Gross, a 34 year old, transient of Hesperia, was previously convicted of several thefts and possession of illegal drugs.
Gross was arrested and booked into the High Desert Detention Center for PC 490.5(a) Shoplifting, PC 666.1(a) Theft with Prior Convictions, HS 11377(a) Possession of Methamphetamine, HS 11395(b)(1) Possession of Drugs with Prior Convictions, HS 11364(a) Possession of Unlawful Paraphernalia, PC 496(a) Possession of Stolen Property, PC 484e(d) Possession of Access Card without Cardholder's Consent, and PC 148(a)(1) Resisting Peace Officer.
