4th of July, Fun, Festive, and Fireworks-Free at Home

Fireworks, food, and fun with family—there’s nothing quite like the Fourth of July in Simi Valley. As residents prepare for backyard barbecues, poolside gatherings, and patriotic playlists, the City of Simi Valley and the Simi Valley Police Department remind everyone to celebrate safely by leaving fireworks to the professionals.

“This holiday is about coming together as a community,” said Police
Chief Steve Shorts. “But illegal fireworks put our safety and neighborhoods at risk. We’re asking everyone to do their part by celebrating responsibly and enjoying the professional fireworks show instead. Let’s enjoy the holiday the Simi Valley way, together, festive, and fireworks-free at home.”

Community members are encouraged to attend the annual fireworks display at Rancho Santa Susana Community Park, hosted by the Simi Valley Days Foundation and the Kiwanis Club of Simi Valley. Gates open at 3:00 p.m., with a fireworks display at 9:00 p.m., simulcast to music on 99.1 The Ranch. The free event also features live music, food trucks, and family-friendly entertainment. Visit www.StarSpangledSimi.com for full event details.

While fireworks may feel like a holiday tradition, they are illegal in Simi Valley, including those labeled as “safe and sane.” Fireworks can lead to injuries, fires, property damage, and distress for pets, veterans, and vulnerable members of the community. Nationally, fireworks result in thousands of injuries and are responsible for approximately 18,000 fires each year, according to the National Safety Council.

To help keep Simi Valley safe, the Police Department is strictly enforcing the City’s zero-tolerance policy on fireworks. In 2023, officers responded to 197 fireworks-related calls, issued 17 citations, made one arrest, and confiscated two large trash bins full of illegal fireworks. Thanks to the proactive efforts of the community and law enforcement, no injuries, fires, or property damage were reported.

During this holiday, the Simi Valley Communications Center experiences a significantly higher call volume. Please use appropriate numbers and be patient with dispatchers. To anonymously report fireworks in progress with an exact location, call the non-emergency line at (805) 583-6950. In the event of an emergency, such as a fire or injury, always call 9-1-1.

The City of Simi Valley and the Simi Valley Police Department encourage everyone to be a good neighbor, prioritize safety, and celebrate responsibly.
