A message about the Borough's Fire Horn System

Over the past few days, Borough Hall has received increased calls and emails from residents regarding the Borough’s Fire Horn System. We want to provide some clarity.

The fire horns, located at the train station, have been an integral part of the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department for over a century. They are connected to our municipal fire alarm system and key Borough buildings throughout town—including our schools. The horns were out of service for several months while repairs were underway, and in the meantime, a temporary horn has been installed to maintain the system’s function until restoration is complete.

The return of the horn, combined with an increase in Fire Department calls—especially during the recent stretch of excessive heat—have made it more noticeable to residents. We understand that, given current global events, this may raise concerns, but please be assured: this is a longstanding system operating as it always has to support public safety.

The horns are vital to the Fire Department dispatch and response and had fallen into such disrepair that some areas of town could not hear them at all.

As always, residents are encouraged to contact Borough Hall or the Police Desk with any questions or concerns.
