OPD Increases Enforcement Ahead of Fourth of July
As part of the Oakland Police Department's (OPD) Summer Safety Plan, OPD will increase its presence throughout the city for the Fourth of July holiday to focus on enforcing laws against illegal fireworks, illegal drug and alcohol vending, celebratory gunfire, and sideshow activities.
OPD, the Oakland Fire Department (OFD), and other city agencies are working together to remove illegal fireworks from residential neighborhoods and prevent wildfires in vulnerable areas.
Please remember that all fireworks, including those labeled “Safe & Sane,” are prohibited in Oakland. Anyone caught possessing or using fireworks can face fines of up to $1,000.
To encourage safe disposal, OFD has fireworks collection barrels at the following fire stations:
• Station 1: 1603 Martin Luther King Jr. Way
• Station 3: 1445 14th Street
• Station 4: 1235 International Boulevard
• Station 5: 934 34th Street
• Station 18: 5008 Bancroft Avenue
• Station 20: 1401 98th Avenue
Residents can use these collection sites to surrender unused fireworks. OPD will also drop off confiscated fireworks at these locations.
If you know someone or see someone who is in possession, selling, and/or lighting fireworks, you can call the OPD Fireworks Tip Line at (510) 777-8814 to anonymously report the sale, possession, and/or use of fireworks in the City of Oakland.
Additionally, due to regional concerns about fire safety and emergency vehicle access, Grizzly Peak Boulevard will be closed to all vehicle traffic between Skyline Boulevard and Centennial Drive from 6 a.m. July 4 through 6 a.m. July 5. Electronic signage and/or personnel will be on hand to prevent traffic from entering.
The City of Oakland is coordinating with neighboring cities and agencies to support this closure and help keep our communities safe.
