Mass transit encouraged

Residents leaving Hoboken on the holiday, or visitors coming to the City to attend holiday events, are strongly encouraged to use mass transit including PATH, NJ Transit, ferries, and Light Rail.

While the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks are scheduled to take place on the East River this year, other local firework displays and celebrations in and around Hoboken are likely to bring crowds to the area which can result in significant traffic delays throughout the City. Those who choose to drive are asked to leave plenty of travel time, abide by all no-parking and detour signs, and plan ahead for delays.

Drivers are reminded that parking in Hoboken is limited, and that garages fill up fast and are on a first come, first served basis. Drivers should also anticipate delays exiting the garage in the evening. The City is offering a garage rate of $40 for 12 hours in Garage B (28 Second St.), Garage D (215 Hudson St.), and Midtown Garage (371 Fourth St.). The rate will be valid from 5 p.m. on July 4 through 5 a.m. on July 5.

Public safety reminders

As Hoboken prepares to celebrate the Fourth of July, the Hoboken Public Safety Department reminds everyone to stay safe while enjoying family, food, and festivities.

The Hoboken Fire Department encourages all to enjoy fireworks at public displays. In New Jersey, it is illegal to light aerial consumer fireworks including sky and bottle rockets, firecrackers, reloadable shell devices, and roman candles, among others. Those found guilty of purchasing, using, discharging, or igniting prohibited fireworks without a required permit face penalties including jail time and fines of up to $500.

Those who choose to use legal ground-based fireworks and non-aerial sparkling devices are advised to use extreme caution and follow recommended guidelines. Learn more here: https://www.hobokennj.gov/docs/firework-safety-tips-and-laws

For those planning to barbecue, as per the New Jersey Fire Code, open-flame cooking devices and outdoor fireplaces/pits are not allowed on combustible balconies, decks, or within 5 feet of combustible construction. Exceptions include one- and two-family dwellings where buildings, balconies, and decks are protected under an automatic sprinkler system. Learn more here: https://www.hobokennj.gov/news/hoboken-fire-department-offers-grilling-safety-tips

The Hoboken Fire Department is alerting the public to a New Jersey State Fire Division warning about alcohol or other liquid-burning fire pits. It is strongly recommended to discontinue use of these devices, which the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has deemed to be at high risk of flash fires and explosions. Residents who own these products can discard them at Hudson County hazardous waste disposal days. Locations and dates can be found here: https://www.hcia.org/index.php/hazardous-waste/hhw-collections

Please drink responsibly and do not drink and drive. The Hoboken Police Department has a year-round zero-tolerance policy for driving while intoxicated.

The Hoboken Health Division reminds all to protect themselves and loved ones from the heat and humidity by staying hydrated, wearing sunscreen, wearing light-colored and breathable clothing, and watching for signs of heat exhaustion including dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and confusion.
