CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

Community Partners:
With summer in full swing, we wanted to review a few crime prevention tips to help you and your community safe from crime.

Home Safety Tips:
  • Ensure that all doors in your residence, including garage doors, are kept closed and securely locked. An open door can serve as an invitation for intruders.
  • Be a responsible neighbor by notifying the police of any suspicious activities occurring in your vicinity.
  • When planning a vacation, arrange for your mail and newspapers to be held or ask a neighbor to collect them. Utilize timers for indoor lights to give the impression that your home is occupied. Additionally, ensure that your alarm system is activated. Consider hiring a lawn service or asking a neighbor to maintain your lawn during your absence.
  • To avoid falling victim to home improvement scams and deceptive burglaries, adopt a proactive stance.
  • Remain vigilant regarding individuals in your neighborhood who may seek to perform home repairs and request entry into your home.
  • Always request identification and inform them that you will verify their credentials with their company before granting access. If they are genuine, they will not object to the delay.

Driver Safety Tips:
  • Avoid leaving valuables or cash in your vehicle. If it is necessary to leave items inside, ensure they are secured in the trunk. If your vehicle has folding rear seats, make certain they are also locked.
  • Stay vigilant for children playing in residential neighborhoods. Young children may prioritize retrieving a ball that has rolled into the street over watching for oncoming vehicles.
  • Exercise caution and drive slowly in the vicinity of parks and playgrounds, especially during the summer months when more children are outside playing.

Parenting Safety Tips:
  • Compile a list of emergency contact numbers for neighbors, family, and friends that your child can reach out to in case of an emergency. Ensure your child understands how to dial 911 and recognizes appropriate situations for doing so.
  • Familiarize yourself with the route your child will take to and from various locations. Remind them to avoid shortcuts or straying from the predetermined path.
  • Set clear guidelines for internet usage. Children should always have adult supervision while online. Emphasize the importance of not sharing personal information on the internet.
  • Instruct your child to check in with a parent before leaving the house and upon returning home. Teach them the value of staying in groups for safety.
