The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Heat Advisory, Severe Thunderstorm Watch, and Flood Watch for our area. Hot and humid conditions are expected to produce heat index values in the upper 90's to around 100 degrees through tonight. Showers and thunderstorms are possible this evening and may produce torrential downpours. An aerial flood watch began at 2:00 pm this afternoon. A few of the potential thunderstorms could be severe with damaging wind gusts in excess of 58 mph.
A watch is intended to provide enough lead time for people to have a plan in case threats increase. A watch can quickly be upgraded to a warning, make sure to monitor local weather conditions. If necessary, move your vehicle to higher elevation and put your emergency break on. All departments are monitoring the situation.
If you lose power, notice must be given directly to ConEdison. You may report and monitor power outages through their mobile app, online, or by phone 1-800-752-6633. If you see downed electrical wires, do not go near them. Assume all downed wires are electrified. Report any downed wires to ConEdison.
The Center for Disease Control provides information about heat and your health. There are facilities where you can go to cool off during extreme heat, referred to as cooling centers. The location closest to our community is the Town of Pelham Public Library, however, all locations are open to the general public. Make sure to check the hours of operation before you go.
